The day Maqbola arrived at the Nowzad hospital, was one of chaos and despair. She had fallen victim to a terrible road traffic accident, with a car colliding at full speed with the cart she was pulling. She suffered a lot of injuries with her leg splintered and broken in several places.
Thankfully, those witness to the accident called our vet team who were straight to the scene, whilst her owner and other locals covered her with blankets to keep her warm and as comfortable as possible. Her owner explained that Maqbola was his sole means of livelihood, used to haul heavy loads of rubbish and waste through the city's narrow streets. The thought of losing her was a devastating blow.
The vet team knew they had to act quickly. A broken leg could lead to life-threatening complications, such as blood poisoning. After a brief consultation, the owner agreed to let her go for emergency treatment at our hospital where her recovery was slow and painful. Maqbola spent weeks confined to a small stall, her leg wrapped in bandages. The sanctuary staff tended to her with the utmost care, providing her with pain medication, nutritious food, and plenty of affection. Maqbola, despite her suffering, remained remarkably calm and patient, and her gentle nature and resilience has inspired everyone who interacts with her.
Over time, Maqbola began to heal. The bandages were gradually removed, revealing a leg that was slowly regaining its strength. She was allowed to spend more and more time outdoors at our sanctuary, socialising with the other animals. Maqbola quickly became a favorite among the staff and residents, her gentle demeanor and affectionate nature winning hearts.
When Maqbola's leg had fully healed, her owner came to collect her. The man was overjoyed to see his beloved donkey alive and well, but the sanctuary team knew that returning Maqbola to her previous life would be a cruel fate. The donkey's leg was still fragile, and the heavy labor she had been forced to endure would undoubtedly cause her pain and suffering.
Thankfully her owner agreed and Maqbola was officially adopted by the sanctuary, where she would spend the rest of her days in peace and comfort.
Today, Maqbola is a cherished member of the Nowzad family. She spends her days grazing and munching on hay, and playing with her donkey companions. Her story is undoubtedly one of resilience and the power of compassion.
