Charlie came to the Nowzad Donkey Sanctuary with his gentle mum Pat in 2021, a couple of weeks before the Taliban took over Afghanistan again. Their female owner had agreed to give them both up, in the face of how difficult life was about to get for women trying to work under Taliban rule. Pat has a severe case of rickets, causing permanent deformities to her front legs. Despite this though, she had been made to work all her life, carrying heavy water casks up and down mountainsides to the remote villages surrounding Kabul. 

Charlie began this life of hardship too, but thankfully not for long and certainly before he too developed musculoskeletal problems like his mum.  Charlie was around the age of two when Nowzad took him and Pat to spend the rest of their lives at our Sanctuary.

It was certainly Charlie’s lucky day and he’s barely left his mum’s side ever since. Just like his mum too, Charlie is the biggest fan of carrots and apples and will try his hardest to get to the front of the queue whenever the sanctuary receives food deliveries!

Charlie’s favourite activity is to get in the exercise yard with his best friend Kushi -  one of the other younger residents. They spend a lot of time kicking up the dirt together and basically creating a bit of mayhem! 

Being the youngest donkey of all has its advantages as Charlie gets away with most things!  He’s also a very affectionate donkey to his four-legged and two-legged friends there, but his favourite stablemate is definitely his mum – they have a very strong bond.
