The oldest rescue dog in our hospital - Babri.  He is a very special and highly adaptable breed of Afghan dog called Kuchi. Kuchi dogs are thought to have been developed by the nomads of Afghanistan as they travelled across all terrains and climates, to be a working breed that guarded livestock against predators and thieves. There are three different types of Kuchi too – mountain, steppe and desert but the all have the same basic sturdy, large boned structure, with a noticeably large head. Due to his longer, very dense coat, we think Babri is a mountain Kuchi dog – he certainly enjoys a daily groom at the hospital to stay on top of all his fur shedding!   

Sadly, Babri has had his ears docked very close to his head suggesting he has been used for dog fighting in the past. He is definitely battle-scarred but fortunately kept his tail (also often docked for fighting purposes). Despite his past, Babri is friendly with most other dogs and certainly loves a lot of fuss and attention from his humans!  Although he has a serious face, again a sign of the breed, he is a playful old boy and absolutely loves to get out on the lead for a walk, or into the exercise pen.

Babri came to us in autumn 2023, with wounds on his ears and also a widespread skin condition. He was very weak and thin so, after discussing with his owner all the treatment and vaccinations he would need to get him better, they decided to give Babri up. Babri is one of the lucky ones, as dogs like him are often just abandoned on the streets once their fighting days are over.
