Born from the vision of a Royal Marine Commando serving in Afghanistan and reflected in our charity’s name Nowzad - meaning “newborn” – we are honoured to commemorate Remembrance Day 2023 and King Charles III with our special poppy in Coronation colours.

Nowzad uses its experience and knowledge of working in war-torn countries to help the animals of Afghanistan and Ukraine affected by conflict. Animal welfare is at the heart of everything we do in both countries. Our local teams of vets and dedicated volunteers treat sick and injured animals and also operate vital trap, neuter, vaccinate and release programmes to humanely control street animal populations and reduce the spread of fatal diseases such as rabies.

In Afghanistan, Nowzad has not only maintained its presence despite the Taliban takeover but has actually expanded. Both our 24-hour animal hospital in Kabul and our Equine Sanctuary are also the bases for our successful Working Animal Project.

In Ukraine, we coordinate the distribution of food and veterinary supplies throughout the country to care for those animals abandoned on the streets and in shelters. Once hostilities cease, Nowzad aims to help with the rebuilding of animal shelters.
