Our boy Tom was found by Dr Reshad in 2021, having just been abandoned by his owner on the mountains in an area of Kabul called Dehmazang due to his old age and probably his inability to work as long and hard as he used to. As well as old age, Tom was suffering from an acute parasite infection and severe dehydration.  Dr Reshad had to make the always-difficult decision then and there whether to attempt to rescue him or humanely put Tom to sleep as he was so lethargic and poorly.

The gamble paid off as Tom made a good recovery once under the tender, loving care of our staff at the Nowzad Donkey Sanctuary. He certainly enjoys the peaceful life and can often be seen dozing contently under the shade of the trees at the sanctuary – his previous life a long-distant memory we hope.
