For World Animal Day 2024, the team travelled out-and-about in the new Nowzad mobile equine clinic, to visit rural communities and give advice on proper horse & donkey husbandry and welfare.
This is vital and very necessary work due to the overwork abuse and neglect these poor animals experience.
The team where possible distributed much smoother and kinder bits for bridles (many owners currently use bits with spikes on sadly) and softer harnesses to replace equipment currently in use. Poor harnessing is the cause of so many of the wounds and infections our teams witness in equines, all across Kabul and the outlying areas. Thankfully, it is usually easily solved by using extra padding and softer materials which our teams always promote.
As expected the team came across many donkeys that had harness wounds and the animals were admitted to our animal hospital for vital treatment.
The team also took time to erect portable stabling for horses and donkeys from one of the five local brick kilns. Working through conditions ranging from -20 degrees in the winter to +40 degrees during an Afghan summer is so arduous for these animals. However, a stable to provide some shelter and respite from the elements makes all the difference.
Summary of all our team achieved for just one day;
- One stable provided
- 45 bits provided
- 6 harnesses for donkeys who had harness wounds
- 5 harnesses for horses
Being there for a donkey or horse in need in Afghanistan by making a donation truly does make a positive difference for that one animal.
