Maverick the horse

Imagine finding an animal utterly resigned to its fate.

That’s what Nowzad’s Chief Vet Dr Reshad faced with ‘Maverick’ in February, amidst the rubble of one of Afghanistan’s notoriously bleak brick kilns. Numbers vary but there are around 600 kilns across Kabul alone, where horses are often worked to death.

Totally emaciated and covered with wounds, Maverick has spent many weeks since under the intensive care of our vets, being hoisted up on to his feet every day and slowly regaining his strength.

Against all expectation, he’s now standing on his own four hooves at our hospital and is a true recovery miracle.

There was no way we could send Maverick back to his old life so we have bought him from the kiln and, as soon as possible, he’ll be moved to Nowzad's Donkey Sanctuary in the northern part of Kabul. Peace and comfort for him at last.

From Maverick and all of us at Nowzad – thank-you.
